The Unspoiled Beauty of Gibraltar

The Meeting Place of Continents

The Rock of Gibraltar stands guard over the Mediterranean, at the southernmost tip of Spain. The climate here is sub-tropical, with welcoming, warm temperatures year round. You will find the local people offer friendly charm in this unique community. The stone was formed millions of years ago, and it has stood the test of time.

The Top of the Rock

Towering above the local countryside, the impressive rock affects the land around it. It stands at the only link between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. It is bold and impressive when seen from the sea or the ground, but the Top Station Cable Cars have an even more outstanding view.

At one end of Main Street, by the Alameda Gardens, is the cable car base camp. At the summit, three terraces offer unique views of the land below. From the top, you can see three countries, two continents and two oceans.

Attend the Gibraltar Fair

The annual fair is held on the Naval Ground in late August each year. The local fair has various attractions that will appeal to many age groups, including rides for children. There are also games, tombolas and side booths, many of which are sponsored by local sporting and charitable organizations. There are plenty of places to sample local cuisine and drink. The Churros stall is always a favorite. A daily program of events at the fair runs in the Family Pavilion.

Nature’s Splendor

A visit to this natural area will unveil a fascinating, diverse world. In dens high on the rock, the Barbary Apes reside. They are the most famous of Gibraltar’s residents, and they are Europe’s only wild primates. They are inquisitive, friendly and charming. Local legend states that when all the apes have left the rock, Gibraltar will no longer be British.

There is also a myriad of plant life in the area, from palms and lavender to jasmine and jacaranda. Bougainvillea, geraniums, honeysuckle and clematis grow alongside many rare species, including Sea Lavender and Candytuft.

The seas in the area also have a great diversity of life. When you are sailing in the bay, your boat will often be followed by leaping dolphins and flying fish. During spring and fall, the Rock is home for multitudes of birds, migrating between their winter grounds in Africa and their Northern Europe breeding grounds. Some resident bird species include the Barbary Partridge, Peregrine Falcon and the Blue Rock Thrush. You will also see black kytes, buzzards, hoopoes, harriers, eagles and owls.

Preserving the Grandeur

There are great efforts being made to preserve the natural environment of the Rock of Gibraltar and its unspoiled beauty for future visitors. There is a large nature reserve on the upper area of the rock, and work is already underway to create a new botanical garden in Alameda Gardens, the most famous public park in the area. The goal is to offer future generations the same beauty you can see today.
