    Stay Home Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, APRIL 07, 2020, Helsinki, Finland

SRAL – The Finnish Amateur Radio League

PLEASE JOIN THE GLOBAL AMATEUR RADIO
    NETWORK AS YOU STAY HOME

In the world-wide amateur radio community, social distancing is not an issue. The ham radio network operates by radio waves with signals flying high and wide, across all borders near and far. Amateur radio operators are well-known as communicators during the happy days, but also during times of crisis. Even if physically locked down, the world is wide open for them. They are encouraged to communicate, keeping their channels clear and their minds and skills sharp for global messaging if needed. While they now extend the physical distance between friends, at the same time they grow closer in their social distance – their minds and hearts.

The Finnish Amateur Radio League (SRAL) with the support of the Finnish Communication Agency (TRAFICOM) are working together to increase awareness and promote the normal orders of each society during this unfortunate period. To do so, the three-million strong amateur radio community is encouraged to stay in touch and keep up their global network.

With that charter and mission in mind the SRAL invites all amateurs to join forces. Keep up the radio activity and the global social network!

TIME PERIOD from Thursday, April 08,2020 16.00 UTC thru July 08,2020, 2359 UTC

Contacts are encouraged to STAYHOME stations as well as to all friends around the world, but also for the purpose of the below-mentioned GMA (DXCC) Award:

Temporary QSH (Stay Happy & Healthy) which may change during the period.

    MESSENGER STATION NETWORK
SRAL is launching ten (10) different stations from OH0 thru OH9 who sign with STAYHOME suffixes, such as OH5STAYHOME. The other stations from other countries signing STAYHOME are qualified to this program. Such stations include 9K9STAYHOME or TC1STAYHOME with the RAST (Thailand) E2STAYHOME station expected to join the network soon.

LATEST ONES IN THE STAYHOME FAMILY

News from Bangkok, Thailand and the world

It was today when the Thai radio regulator, NBTC, granted a permit E2STAYHOME for Thailand to join the the COVID-19 movement as the country number 33. RAST president, Jack, HS1FVL was on 20M to kick-off the special event while Champ, E21EIC with his wife JC, E20NKB handed out the very first QSOs.

On the same day, Andy, 5Z/G3AB informed that their regulator was in the process for allowing the locals to air the 5Z4STAYHOME special event station which would bring Africa to join the movement, enhancing the messages that governments throughout the world are releasing to their citizens.

Amateur radio is not only promoting the good-will and sense of belonging during these hard times but also keeping its communication network available for this unfortunate period.

        FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STAYHOME CAMPAIGN REACHES ITS PINNACLE, JUNE 06-07. 2020

CONTEST-LIKE ACTIVITY FROM SATURDAY, 12.00 to SUNDAY, 11.59

In total, more than 30 countries have activated STAYHOME-suffixed stations to amplify the important message and participate in a large international showcase of Amateur Radio during the COVID-19 crisis. It is estimated that some 150 000 messages have been passed through the network around the world.

Oms, PY5EG, one of the project participants, alone, has completed more than 20 000 messages to 181 countries and to all 40 zones. Congratulations! The latest United Nations activation is; 4U9STAYHOME by Ivo, 9A3A from the UN base in Brindisi, Italy.

The highlight of the event is a June 06-07, 24-hour radio gathering, when all STAYHOME stations and the world will gather on the airwaves to wish each other well and conduct a global message passing in a contest-like framework. At that point the further validity of the STAYHOME message will be reviewed with the sincere hope that all countries would be able to begin easing these heavy restrictions, eventually making this message obsolete.

The project patron is the Foreign Minister of Finland, Pekka Haavisto and it is endorsed by IARU President Tim Ellam, VE6SH and the United Nations ARC with multiple STAYHOME activations.

While the Covid-19 pandemic is still causing major issues in many parts of the world we are now working on two opposite fronts: while welcoming many countries to the new world with the message of STAYSAFE, we are at the same time giving our thoughts and sympathy to those who still suffer.

We welcome all COVID-19 related special callsigns to participate in the June 06/07 event and their efforts will be credited for full contest multiplier value. You are all welcome to this unique worldwide event.

YOUNG LINE-UP OF NEW YORK OPERATORS WILL AIR MAMMOTH W2I/STAYHOME SIGNAL

A group of four young operators from the NYCDXA - New York City DX Association (https://www.qrz.com/db/w2ndx/), Chris KE2A, Alain K1FM, Jason WF2N and Neil N5EIL will be operating for 24-hours as W2/STAYHOME from a top of the line remote station located in the easternmost city of USA, Eastport, ME during the weekend of June 06-07, 2020.

The team is thankful to the RHR team and Ray Higgins, W2RE for sponsoring this event and for allowing the young operators to access the station to support this unique event, which otherwise would be difficult to do from their apartments in New York City. https://www.remotehamradio.com/ )

The young team will add some extra high tech flavor to the operation by setting up a server for live updates on ClubLog and real time streaming on YouTube. The YouTube link will be available on the W2I QRZ.com page: https://www.qrz.com/db/w2i

MARKET REEF, OJ0A/OJ0JR WILL BE ACTIVATED AS PART OF THE CODIC-19 EVENT

First entry group to Market Reef remains on hold in Aland Islands, waiting for better weather. If all works well Henri, OH3JR will land on the rocks on Friday prior to the event and with no further delay he will hoist an assortment of wires to make the OJ0A callsign QRV as an event multiplier on CW, SSB and FT8. Many things need to fit in place to have OJ0A appearing from the sea-washed lighthouse. Henri will remain in OJ0 for the whole week and operate as OJ0JR. QSL via OH3JR.

On June 6 & 7 over 6000 worldwide participants made the COVID-19 Radio Communication Event a great success. While the logs are still coming in (over 800 at this time) some interesting statistics have already surfaced.

The number of countries that participated in the event is more than 120 and the total number of participants was a lot higher than expected. Ten OH*STAYHOME stations with 45 operators resulted 29.039 QSOs. (STAYHOME OH Total 132.000). The STAYHOME category was won by ZW5STAYHOME with 4050 QSOs followed not far behind by OH1STAYHOME with 3797 QSOs. The highest Single Operator category score is still unknown at this time as the logs are still coming in. Several high scorer WRTC operators were participating, even the winner LY9A.

As the COVID-19 pandemic is in different phases in different countries, this is not the finish of the STAYHOME campaign as only parts of EU and NA are slowly taking steps towards a normal life. We all pray to God for those areas and countries that are still suffering in the hands of this unfortunate virus. We are unified as one to help one to another – people and countries!

                SUMMARY:

The COVID-19 Radio Communication Event was a global virtual Amateur Radio gathering, passing well-being messages among radio operators worldwide thus sharing the airwaves during this unfortunate global COVID-19 pandemic and promoting a sense of belonging and mental health. It was not a contest although it was conducted in a contest-like fashion.

The event organizers are DX-ers and contesters who along with a variety of organizations and supporters were able to keep the airwaves alive together with the entire ham radio community. The STAYHOME campaign is ever grateful to all who supported the organizers’ main mission of being active on the radio during these difficult times.

THE COVID-19 COMMUNICATION EVENT WAS PART OF THE GLOBAL STAYHOME ACTIVITY FROM APRIL 08, 2020 TO JUNE 07, 2020

The OH0 - OH9 stations made an impressive 133.000 contacts along with 25.000 FT8 QSOs logged by the Brazilian digital station ZW5STAYHOME, working hams from a total of 180 countries from all 40 CQ zones, with other STAYHOME stations totaling almost 290.000 contacts in the two-month period. This reinforced the recommended STAYHOME/STAYSAFE message of distancing and well-being among the global on-the-air amateur radio community. On June 08, 2020 the Finnish led movement was put on hold while waiting for further news from around the world. Unfortunately the news has been discouraging and our sympathy goes to the families of the suffering and the lost lives. Amateur radio operators continue to pass well-being messages and are ready and at service for the society when needed.

These events were organized jointly by Radio Arcala of Finland and Araucaria DX Group of Brazil
