In the Christian tradition he is referred to as "James the Less", one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ who in the New Testament is called James of Alphaeus (Matthew 10.3[1], Mark 3.18[2], Luke 6.15 [3], Acts 1,13[4]). The patronymic allows him to be clearly distinguished from the other apostle named James, whose father was instead Zebedee and who is traditionally called James the Greater. In the Gospels we then find a James, brother of Joses, mentioned in reference to their mother, Mary (Mark 15:40[5] and 16:1[6] and Matthew 27:56[7]). If it is the same James, it can then be assumed that James's mother would have been the Mary of Clèophas of the parallel verses of John 19:25[8]. On the basis of so few citations it is therefore not possible to reconstruct anything of his biographical story, not even in the period in which he was a follower of Jesus. In the rest of the Acts and in other New Testament writings, there is no reference even to his activity following the death of Christ. . We know nothing about his death, unless James the Less is identified with James the Just, killed by stoning in 62 AD. [no source]. In the Martyrology, on May 3, it is reported that James "finally crowned his apostolate with martyrdom".
