    History of Olympic Airways

On July 30, 1956, Aristotle Onassis signed the contract for the acquisition of TAE (Technical Aviation Operations).

On April 6, 1957, he founded Olympic Airways, an air transport company based in Athens. On the same day, the first route of the company from Athens to Thessaloniki takes place with a DC-3 aircraft piloted by Pavlos Ioannidis.

On June 1, 1966, the first transatlantic route from Athens to New York took place. In 1968, on 1 November, the first route to Africa operated to the city of Johannesburg via Nairobi. In 1969, the first flight to Montreal, Canada, took place on 1 April.

In 1971 the number of passengers flying with Olympic Airways exceeded 2,000,000 and its fleet consisted of 24 aircraft. On August 2nd of the same year, Alexander Onassis founded the first subsidiary of the company, Olympic Aviation, to serve the small airports of Greece.

On March 3, 1972, the first flight to Sydney, Australia took place with a Boeing 707 aircraft named "City of Athens".

In 1973, on January 22, a sad event shocked Greece. The son of the company's founder Alexander Onassis is seriously injured and succumbs to his injuries two days later after the crash of the Piaggio 136L2 aircraft in which he is a pilot in the cockpit. The tragic event is the beginning of the end for Aristotle Onassis' Olympic Airways.

On December 10, 1974, Aristotle Onassis called on the government, citing the contract he had signed with the Greek State, to take over Olympic Airways within six months. On January 1, 1975, the Greek State bought Olympic Airways from Aristotle Onassis and the company was controlled by state administration.

In 2009, on March 23rd, the contract for the acquisition of Olympic Airways by MIG was signed and on October 1st of the same year MIG took full control and renamed the company from Olympic Airways to Olympic Air. The Olympic Airways fleet initially consisted of Douglas DC3, DC4, DC-6 piston aircraft, several of which came from TAE. This was followed by the first jets De Havilland Comet 48 (1960) and Boeing 707-320 in 1966. Additional aircraft that were added to the fleet were the following: Boeing 720-051B ( 1972), 727-200 (1969), 737-200 (1976), 737-400 (1991), 747-200 (1973) and Airbus A 300-B 4 (1979) , A300-600 (1991), A340-300 (1999).
