    EM80UPA - Ukranian Rebellion Army

EM80UPA Special call devoted to 80th anniversary of the UKRAINIAN REBELLION ARMY

UKRAINIAN REBELLION ARMY (UPA) - combat units that were under the command of the Ukrainian Main Liberation Council. The official date of creation of the UPA is considered to be October 14, 1942, the day of the Protection, although the creation of the army was announced in the spring of 1943. The army was formed on the basis of military units of the OUN, and its commander was Roman Shukhevich (General Chuprinka). The number of the army reached 100,000 people (including 40,000 soldiers). The UPA enjoyed the broad support of the population of Ukraine. UPA fighters prevented the deportation of young people to forced labor in Germany, the eviction of Ukrainians from their native places by the Poles, and, finally, the deportations to the eastern regions of the USSR, which were carried out by the Soviet authorities. In the fight against the UPA, the Soviet authorities resorted to provocative methods, special units of the NKVD-MGB, pretending to be UPA soldiers, terrorized the local population. At the same time, the local population that supported the UPA fighters (primarily rural residents of Western Ukraine) were subjected to mass repressions as "traitors of the people." Separate units of the UPA in 1947 managed to fight their way to the West. The last units of the UPA on the territory of the Ukrainian SSR were liquidated only in 1954. Separate combat units operated until 1956 and later. The imprisoned UPA soldiers were the main driving force behind the uprisings in the concentration camps in the early 1950s. They had an ideological and moral influence on the sixties and human rights activists who arrived in the camps in the 1960s and 1970s.
