BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MONTSERRAT MONASTERY
Next year, 2025, the millennium of the founding of the monastery of Montserrat by Oliba, abbot of Ripoll and Cuixà and bishop of Vic, will be celebrated.
Around the year 880 on the mountain of Montserrat there was already a small hermitage, but it was not until 1025 when a group of monks from Ripoll, sent by their abbot, built a Benedictine monastery next to the hermitage. Thus the monastery of Montserrat was born.
That the founder was the abbot and bishop Oliba, one of the most important promoters of peace during the Middle Ages, has deeply marked the monastery of Montserrat throughout its history. For a thousand years, Montserrat has wanted to be a place of welcome and meeting, a place of listening, understanding and peace. Not in vain, one of its main mottos has always been: Pax! A simple but profound motto.
Rooted to the earth and open to the world, grateful for the past and walking towards the future. This is the spirit with which the Montserrat monastery prepares to celebrate its first millennium of existence.
