About Me.
I am an IT Engineer by vocation. I have been in this field since 1987. I gave up on the techie side in the year 2000, where I shifted to Technical Sales and Presales. I always like to say that I design on paper what other people want to achieve with their IT Infrastructure. For some of customers, I am their Trusted Advisor for Enterprise IT Solutions.
I got my Amateur Radio Licence in 1983. I got involved in computers, yep the old Sinclair ZX, the Amstrad, the Commodore 64 & 128 and the Apple IIe...hihihi. Then the IBM came out and I played and repaired them.
On the Amateur side, I got involved in digital mode. I used to run a BBS (F6FBB) providing a packet link between Indonesia, and South Africa. I had a link on 15 mts (21.110 Mhz) at 300 bauds and on 10 mts (28.110 Mhz) with BPSK FO12 (1200 bauds). The system was available 24 x 7. In 1993, I interfaced the station with a PSTN connection whereby local amateur operators could dial/phone in in digital mode. There was no Internet then. From 1993 to 1999, I operated the first and only Bulletin Board System on telephone lines locally. My shack was like a small factory, with HF radio's, computers etc. The roof of my house was like an antenna farm back then. I had a go at satellite too.
By the year 2000, my HF BBS partners (ZS6KE, YB5QZ and YB5NDU) wanted to move on in their life and career I guess. The link was no more. It did cost us quite a bit in terms of electricity bill hihihi. We had loads of fun testing all sorts of connectivity like RTTY, AMTOR etc.
My career and my family became more and more demanding that in 2003, I definitely pulled off the big switch. I sold / gave away all of my equipment to local fellows and moved on. I had spent a little more than 15 years in the field of electronic and digital communication and I enjoyed every piece of it. Indirectly it contributed to make me what I am today. My hobby is my vocation, I used to say.
Apart from Amateur Radio, I also enjoy photography. I have been a professional photographer for many years now.
The station.
I am using a Yaesu FT710 with Triband Dipole.
I am also on Echolink from time to time. I am now QRV in digital mode on HF.
I have a Node running on AllStarLink. My Node number is 40248
