He was an ARRL Life member.
His friend VA7FJT, Andy Neimers, says Anderson was "the godfather of the Latvian Amateur Radio League, LRAL," and a founding member of the Latvians Worldwide Roundtable Net.
He sent tens of thousands of dollars of gear to get the LRAL running in the early 1990s, including a 2M repeater in Vidzeme Province in Latvia.
He was an unofficial coach for Latvian teams at every World Radio Team Competition event.
As a youth he was a political refugee, went to the US and enlisted in the US Army Special Forces, serving as a Green Beret in Vietnam.
