    GB0FS - Flying Scotsman

On Saturday 15 September 2018, two members of Bury Radio Society and East Lancashire Railway will be operating ‘Railway Mobile’ with special call GB0FS from onboard the Flying Scotsman as she travels from Bury to Holyhead and back.

Dave M0LMN and Mo M0TXK will be using special event callsign GB0FS, as the iconic steam locomotive makes a round trip through north west England to the island of Anglesey in North Wales.

Dave and Mo have obtained approval from Ofcom for the operation, who had not previously authorised this type of activity under current licensing arrangements. Although others have operated from trains on previous occasions, using their own callsigns, we believe that a railway mobile Special Event Station aboard the Flying Scotsman on the main railway network is an amateur radio first!

Dave and Mo will be operating DMR and Fusion via repeaters, as well as simplex on 2m and 70cm.

Also will be beaconing APRS as GB0FS and M0TXK for anyone who wishes to follow us,

If you would like to be part of this unique amateur radio experience, listen out for Dave and Mo calling as GB0FS on Saturday 15 September 2018.

Intend to work simplex repeaters plus DMR and maybe Llandudno Fusion repeaters. We will monitor 2m and 70cm calling channels but tests on East Lancs Railway who have supported us suggest a problem on 2m when lights on.

We have made successful qso’s from the type of heritage carriages that will be being used but the special event Station is largely experimental. Handhelds have given best results and modern EU certified are being used. APRS has been used main line without issues running 5 watts.

The entire train is pre-digital era heritage excursion chartered by the East Lancashire Railway who kindly provide a first class shack for Bury Radio Society and the activity is approved by them.
Special QSL will be available via M0LMN buro, direct.
    Ads for direct QSL:
Dave Robinson, Height End Farm, Kirk Hill Road, Haslingden, Lancashire, BB4 8TZ, England.
