R1255F. SES during Kaliningrad City Day
Kaliningrad was founded in 1255 by knights of the Teutonic Order as the Konigsberg Castle on the place of the Prussian settlement of Tvangste. Now the city - the center of the most western and smallest region of the Russian Federation. The third on the population in the Baltics and the second on the Northwestern Federal District of Russia, Kaliningrad keeps the post-war multinationality and is developed as the cultural, scientific and industrial center.
Primary ecomomic sectors are agricultire, fihery and food industry, the shipbuilding and automotive industry, mining.
Scientific centers are presented by institutes of fishery, oceanology and by technical and federal universities.
The city strikes with the variety of the European, North American and Asian flora adjoining in a historical part to buildings of 14 - 20 centuries. The Museum of Amber tells about the Baltic solar stone which more than 90% of stocks are in the territory of the region. The complex of World Ocean Museum includes a fishing trawler, diesel submarine, the world's largest scientific research vessel Vityaz and the vessel of the space researches service Kosmonavt Viktor Patsayev, are open for visit. The cathedral founded in a XIV century now holds the cultural and religious center. The Kaliningrad Zoo is one of the oldest and the largest in Russia.
The City Day is traditionally celebrated in the second weekend of July. It coincides with professional day of the fisherman - a popular profession that very respected by inhabitants.
