    Information from his qrz page:
Monterey is the most historic city in California. Using maps of the 1542 Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo expedition which charted the California coast, including Monterey Bay, explorer Sebastian Vizcaíno landed ashore in December 1602 in the bay which he named "Monterey" after the Spanish viceroy in Mexico, the Count of Monte Rey.

In 1770, Franciscan Friar (and now Saint) Junípero Serra and Army Captain of Dragoons D. Gaspar de Portolá set out from the south to establish a settlement in Monterey Bay which they co-founded on 03 June 1770. Monterey became the capital of Alta California and remained so during the Spanish and Mexican periods.

    Notable events:

1770 - Monterey founded in New Spain

1776 - Soldiers of the Presidio take up a collection and send it to General George Washington to support the American Revolution

1777 - Capital of Las Californias province moved to Monterey, Alta California from Loreto, Baja California; it is the most distant Spanish provincial capital in North America

1818 - Monterey attacked from the sea by Argentine privateer/pirate Hipólito Bouchard and his two-ship squadron during Argentinian revolution against Spain. This was the only sea-to-land battle on the West Coast of the USA

1821 - Mexican independence; Monterey passes from Spanish control to Mexico

1827 - Mexico builds a Customs House in Monterey; all foreign ships wanting to conduct commerce in California required to visit the port and pay customs duties

1842 - Monterey attacked by US Navy in mistaken belief of a war with Mexico

1843 - US establishes a Consulate General in Monterey, Alta California, Mexico

1846 - Mexican American War Battle of Monterey on 07 July; three US Navy warships occupy the town; US forces lower the Mexican flag at the Customs House and raise the US flag and claim all California, completing the historic continental expansion of the US from the Atlantic to the Pacific

1848 - After Mexican-American War, Monterey passes from Mexican to US control

1849 - California Constitutional Convention, September-October. In order to join the Union, a state constitution is required. US and Californio (Mexican Californian) delegates meet in Colton Hall, Monterey and draft a constitution in English and Spanish

1850 - California becomes a full state on 09 September, bypassing the traditional pre-statehood Territory status; the capital is moved to Sacramento to be closer to the gold mines

1880 - The Hotel Del Monte opens, a resort complex frequented by the rich and powerful; it is the predecesor to the Pebble Beach company

1919 - The fictional character Zorro ("the Fox") is first published, and inspires novels, movies & TV shows, and comic books. Zorro frequently travels from his hacienda in southern California to Monterey to meet (or battle) the governor.

1930's-1950's - John Steinbeck, Nobel Prize winner in Literature writes "Tortilla Flat" and "Cannery Row" about life in Monterey; Hollywood turns them into movies

1947 - The US Navy buys the Hotel Del Monte complex, and in 1951, it becomes the Naval Postgraduate School

1976 - On the occasion of the Bicentennial of the United States, the King of Spain Juan Carlos de Borbón visits Monterey and presents a statue of co-founder Portolá. Hams know Juan Carlos as EA0JC.

1984 - Monterey Bay Aquarium opens. The site served as the filming location for the fictitious Cetacean Institute in the 1986 film Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

1987 - Pope John Paul II visits Monterey and Padre Serra's grave at the Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Río Carmelo

    Historical continuity:

The Presidio of Monterey is the only presidio (fort, derived from the Latin word praesidium) of the four established by the Spanish in the late 1700's to maintain a military mission. Formerly a cavalry post, the horses are gone and today the Presidio is a US Army base and home to the Defense Language Institute.

The Royal Presidio Chapel, completed 1794, is the only remaining building of the original Spanish fort, and as the San Carlos Cathedral, is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Monterey. It is the oldest continuously-operating house of worship in California.
