Saarland University was founded in 1948 and is known for its computer, nano and life sciences. As a bilingual university under the sponsorship of France, it maintains close ties with its neighbouring country and has a strong focus on Europe. Particularly noteworthy is the extensive range of cross-border degree programmes, which can lead to a double or even triple degree. The university places great emphasis on networking and cooperation, both within its own departments and with other universities and research institutions worldwide. All major scientific organisations are represented locally, including Max Planck, Leibniz and Fraunhofer institutes as well as Helmholtz centres and institutes.
