    THE HISTORY OF THE RKZ

Radio Club Zagreb is one of the largest amateur radio clubs in Croatia, and one of the oldest amateur radio clubs in Europe.

    1924

RKZ was founded on the 29th March 1924, by the group of gifted enthusiasts fascinated by the technical possibilites of radio technology, under the name ‘'Club of friends of Radiophony'.

Dr. Oton Kučera, famous Croatian astronomer and physicist, was elected as RKZ first President.
The first issue of RKZ Club newsletter 'Radio Šport' was published on 19th April 1924. The magazine played an important role in promoting radio in Croatia.
Only three months after foundation, the club had 124 members from City of Zagreb and 12 members from the other regions of Croatia. Members were active in constructing radio stations as well as operating them, from the very beginning.

On 14th June 2024 RKZ Club Management sent out initial petition to the Government of the "Kraljevina Srba, Hrvata i Slovenaca (the Kingdom of SHS - Serbs, Croats and Slovenes) in Belgrade asking permission to "immediately set up a broadcasting station in Zagreb".

    1925

On 5th August 2025 RKZ Club Representatives signed the contractual document with SHS Minister of Post, named ‘Contract of installation and exploatation of one broadcasting radiophone station in Zagreb and surroundings'.

    1926

On 26th March 1926 SHS Government passed a statutory declaration for shareholder's rights in Radio Zagreb, as ‘Akcionarsko društvo pod nazivom Radio Zagreb d.d. sa sjedištem u Zagrebu’ – ‘Joint-stock company Radio Zagreb d.d. with headquarters in Zagreb’.

At 8:30 p.m. on 15 May 1926, Radio Zagreb broadcast service began with the sounds of the Croatian National Anthem and an announcement read by Božena Begović, followed by a speech by Dr. Stern, Radio Zagreb was heard for the first time on the frequency MW 350 m. Initial power output 350W.

    1928

Radio Zagreb Broadcasting station split from the RKZ Amateur club in 1928.
