WORLD LITERATURE DAY It is a symbolic day for world literature, since that day, in 1616, Cervantes, Garcilaso de la Vega and Shakespeare died (Cervantes actually died on the 22nd, but was buried on the 23rd, and as for Shakespeare, that 23rd April corresponds to the Julian calendar, still in force in Elizabethan England). The date of the so-called book day coincides with the birth or death of other prominent authors, such as Maurice Druon, Josep Pla, Manuel Mejía Vallejo and William Wordsworth. In Catalonia and in more and more parts of Spain it is celebrated with the gift of a book and a rose. Also on this day, the Cervantes Prize, the most important in Spanish literature, is awarded.
