Already in 2015, the United Nations established the International Year of Light and light-based technologies with an inauguration ceremony that took place on 19 and 20 January in Paris. The purpose? Sensitize public opinion and world institutions "on the progress of light-based technologies and their applications". About 13 thousand events in 147 countries to celebrate the importance of light, not only a symbol of life but also an essential resource for the economic and social development of the planet. On that occasion, industry leaders, scientists, artists and NGOs pledged to work together for a series of initiatives that would continue beyond 2015, such as the promotion of solutions that would incentivize solar energy. The success of the International Year of Light led, a few years later, to the proclamation by UNESCO of the International Day of Light, which was celebrated for the first time on May 16, 2018. Why May 16? Because it is the anniversary of the first laser operation on a ruby crystal conducted by the physicist and engineer Theodore Maima.
