In the old Roman calendar, the year began in March and the sixth month was called sextilis. Later, with the addition of ianuarius (January) and februarius (February) at the beginning of the year, it became the eighth month of the year. In the 8 a. C., Octavio Augusto, first Roman emperor, chose to give him his own name and since then Sextilis was renamed Augustus, in Greek Αύγουστος. This month was chosen to honor the emperor because in it, in the year 30 a. C., he defeated Cleopatra and Marco Antonio and entered Rome victorious. His decision imitated that taken by the Roman Senate, which some years earlier changed the name of the month quintilis to call it iulius (July), in homage to Julius Caesar. There is an erroneous belief that the month of August takes 31 days by determination of Octavio Augusto. The Roman emperor considered the month of el, which at that time supposedly lasted 30 days, to be less than the month of iulius, which had one more day; therefore, he would have decided to remove one day from February (which lasted 29 in common years and 30 in leap years) and add it to Augustus. But according to history, the month of August had already been 31 days since the implementation of the Julian calendar promoted by Julius Caesar in 45 BC. c.
