    4U1UN News 31 July 2020.
NEWS UPDATE – Greetings from UNARC/4U1UN. As most are aware, UNHQ has been shut down for some time due to COVID-19. As a result, basic maintenance of equipment has been postponed until the building is reopened to staff. The Secretary General has implemented a multi-phased approach based on state and federal guidelines. As such, we hope to regain access in October or November. It’s at that time that maintenance activities will be scheduled with the appropriate departments in order to address pressing equipment failures. This includes repair to our Acom amplifier control module as well as the beacon antenna.

On other news, I’ve been testing and evaluating a Flex Radio Systems 6600M which was kindly loaned to us by our friends at Flex Radio. The Flex SDR system has proven more than capable of performing in our constrained operating environment, and is something as current club president, hope to implement into our station as soon as possible. Many thanks go to Flex Radio, especially, Matt Youngblood for his generosity and willingness to work with the United Nations Amateur Radio Club 4U1UN.

I’ll try to update you with more news as it’s made available to me by senior management and our administration.

Until then, be safe. Be well.

    73, James K2QI.

The UN ARC’s Facebook page reports the UN HQ building has been shut down due to coronavirus. Basic maintenance of the ham gear has been postponed until the building is reopened. The ops hope to get access in October-November. They say there are “pressing equipment failures” to deal with including repair of the ACOM amp control module and the beacon antenna. K2QI, James, president of the UN radio club, has been testing a Flex 6600M loaned by the Flex company. He says it has “proven more than capable of performing in our constrained operating environment.” James says he hopes to have it in place soon.

Over the past two days 4U1UN has been QRV on 60 meters (5357 KHz), 5 MHz. Two nights ago around 400 QSOs in about 30 DXCC Entities were made on FT8 on 5 MHz. “Pending unforeseen events such as equipment failure or difficulties accessing the station” there will be continuing activity on 60 meters in the coming days, says KO8SCA, Adrian. 4U1UN is running about 35 watts on 60 meters FT8. 4U1UN may also be QRV on CW on 5 MHz, on 5373 KHz. Activity could start around 2300Z. QSL via HB9BOU.

To all the stations calling but couldn't get through, we apologize. The noise floor at UNHQ is often S9, sometimes +10 over. That's the issue of having a vertical 450 feet
