    Hello all,

My name is Thomas and I currently live in sunny island nation of Bahrain in the Middle East. I am from Columbia, MO, but was a Military Brat and lived in many different places. I am also Vet (ADA) and I work for a Defense Contractor. I started a little late in the game with HAM (42), but already love it (and have spent quite a bit of $$$ so far. lol). I received my ticket in late September and upgraded in the middle of Oct to General of 2022.

I have over 25yrs experience with working with tactical HF, UHF and VHF (Digital, Analog, Freq Hopping, TDMA, FDMA,Satellite, Serial and TCP/IP) links. I am excited to start with the Amateur side and get to experience more forms of communications.

I started with a IC-705 QRP radio and I am very impressed with its capabilities. In the shack I mainly use the FTDX-10 and love its versatility and its ease of use with PCs. When i get the itch for some 2m or 70cm I tend to use my 991, I especially like Yeasu's WIRES-X, but have done quite a bit of DMR and D-STARS (Even a little P-25 and NXDN). I aslo have started to do C4FM on 10m (29.250MHz) and look forward to seeing how that plays out. Due to the difficulty in getting a beam antenna I have largely relied on wire or vertical antennas for HF (DXCcommander Rapide) and therefore do a significant amount of Digital work and SSB when I can. While I have only had my ticket since 2022, this is the 3rd country in which I hold a license (U.S. WE1LDS and formerly Kuwait 9K5MO) and I am so excited to FINALLY get back to playing radio as Bahrain's newest HAM.

As I am an expat living abroad I have (at least in my mind) 3 different shacks that I "feel" that I need to have. Obviously, the one here in Bahrain and two more in the U.S. (At both of my parents homes) as that is where I stay when I come home. To that end, it is only prudent that I have them all fully stock, as best as I can, lol. I therefore have "maybe" enough radios to barely get the job done. Here are some of the great radios I operate with: 3 FT-991s, FT-100s, Flex 6400, FTDX-10, FTDX-1200, IC-7300, 2 Xeigu X-6100s, 4 IC-705s, FT-891, 5 FTM-100s, FTM-200, FTM-300, ID-5100A, FT-1, 3FT-2s, FT-3, 6 FT-70s, VX6, VX-8, VX-3, FT-60, a couple 50w portable amps (Used mainly with the 705), 2 XPA-125Bs, MFJ 998 (Used with the Alpha 9500 amp) and a couple for TNCs. Antennas is where I am lacking, I mainly have EFHWs, a Random Wire and a couple 20m Dipoles for QRP work. I do have 2 DXCommander Rapide that I use as a main antenna at my QTH here in Bahrain and in Missouri, but would love to get a Yagi, but might just go with monoband resonant antennas for each band due to availability.

I am quite active in the digital voice, specifically C4FM and therefore have a couple of OpenSpots that I use to connect to various TG, Rooms, Reflectors...etc. I spend most of my time in the KC Wide WIRES-X room, but still love to crossmode in to DMR TGs and even D-STARS reflectors. It truely is the best hobby one could have. As I just received my Bahrain license I don't have any pics yet, but will update soon.

    73,

    Tom Lancaster/A93MO
