Mark Saurman, N8TLV/VO1ONE will be active as VY0SAT from Gjoa Haven, King William Island, IOTA NA - 131, Canada, 30 April - 3 May 2025.
He will operate on 20 - 10m, SSB, FT8 and also via amateur radio satellites.
QSL via N8TLV direct, LOTW.
QTH Locator - EP28bp.
Information from his QRZ page:
Hello! I've been a ham since 1991. My callsigns are ex-KB8NDW, ex-M0BRJ, N8TLV, and VO1ONE. Most of my operations have been mobile or portable. I enjoy working satellite. My XYL enjoys it too as it means I'm only on the radio for no more than 15 minutes at a time, hi! But I really enjoy travel, especially places not many other people go, to give people the opportunity to work a rare grid, rare IOTA, rare POTA, and a rare prefix. When I get that email that says my QSO was what finally pushed them over the edge for VUCC or some endorsement, it makes it all worth it.
So, if you're reading at this point, you've probably heard that I will be active soon. Here are the details of my arrival and departure:
I will be in Gjoa Haven from 30-April/2025 1840Z to 3-May/2025 1945Z
Please note, there are a lot of moving parts to my arrival that have the potential to delay things. I will be updating my progress via Twitter/X @VO1ONE so please follow me on there!
I will be active on Satellite (both linear and FM, no digital though) and on HF bands 20m through 10m, primarily SSB and FT8. Satellite passes will be announced on http://hams.at and Twitter/X.
Working Conditions:
•HF: Icom IC-7300, Trans World TW-2010 antenna
•Satellite: Yaesu FT-817ND and Icom IC-705, full duplex, Arrow Antenna 3-elements on 2m, 7-elements on 70cm.
While I anticipate spending a lot of time making radio contacts, I'd also like to spend some time with the local Inuit population, experiencing cultural events and activites. Perhaps some locals will get bitten by the ham radio bug and you'll be able to work this place for more than a 73 hour window of time! Please, if you're working me on FM satellite, don't use big QRO and also please give me opportunity to respond. If everyone transmits over each other, I can't get in and no one gets a QSO which is sad
My grid and IOTA (HF only) are in the details, but also a QSO with me counts for POTA CA-4585, which no one has activated before! The Northwest Passage Trail Territorial Park isn't a park in the traditional sense, but a group of areas of historical importance in the exploration of the Northwest Passage. One of these areas is the entire hamlet of Gjoa Haven!
QSL - All QSOs will be logged into LoTW as soon as practical for me. In the case of satellite contacts, this will be the result of me transcribing recordings and will take a bit of time so please be patient. If you prefer a paper card, please QSL via N8TLV. Please do not send snail mail to Gjoa Haven! If it doesn't get there by 3-May/2025, I will likely never receive it.
I appreciate each and every QSO! I know some of you take time off of work, wake up at odd hours of the night, or have to tell their kids to wait a couple minutes until I get this rare one, so I don't make light of that. All the very best of 73 to you!
