Several decades ago he was a member of the British-based Nyasaland Police in what is now Malawi.
He kept daily skeds with ham friends back in the UK on 20 CW and SSB.
After a return to the UK due to political unrest and dangers in Nyasaland, he spent time back in the UK.
When things settled down, he returned to Malawi and worked at Club Makokola, a holiday resort on the shore of Lake Malawi, where he built a permanent radio shack, where he and G0JMU/7Q7HB, operated a few months a year in the 90s and early 2000s.
Again in the UK, he became a flying instructor in Netherthorpe, near Sheffield, England.
He entertained club members in England with his tales from Africa, once when he was attacked by a lion and another landing a DC-3 airplane with parts falling off the wings.
Les was in his mid-80s when he passed.
