On the banks of Riacho Jenipapo, in Campo Maior, Piauí, Maranhão and Ceará fought for the country's independence against Portuguese troops commanded by Major João José da Cunha Fidié. In a part of Brazil it was worth the 7th of September, but in the rest of the country the independence that actually happened afterwards, not least because the news there takes time to arrive. The Portuguese troops fought with firearms and the sertanejos with what they had. Despite the victory, the Portuguese retreated. In Piauí, in the city of Campo Maior, on the banks of the Jenipapo River, the Portuguese lost hope of having a colony in America and were expelled from Brazilian lands.
