March 2022 is the 200th anniversary of the birth, and in January - the 140th anniversary of the death of Ignacy Łukasiewicz, the founder of the global oil industry. He belongs to the honorable group of Poles, whose activities left a great and positive impact on the development of our homeland, as well as the whole world. Ignacy Łukasiewicz was born in Zaduszniki near Mielec, in an impoverished noble family with patriotic traditions. After the death of his father - a participant in the Kościuszko Uprising, due to his financial situation, he had to leave the gymnasium in Rzeszów and start working as a pharmacy assistant. He developed the acquired knowledge and skills during his pharmaceutical studies at the Jagiellonian University and in Vienna. He was active in Lviv, working in the pharmacy of Piotr Mikolasch, where, together with Jan Zeh, he separated kerosene from it in the process of distillation of crude oil. He also worked in Gorlice, Jasło and Krosno. In the Krosno poviat, in Bóbrka, in cooperation with Tytus Trzecieski and Karol Klobassa-Zrencki, in 1854 he established the first oil mine in the world. In turn, he launched oil refineries in Ulaszowice, Klęczany, Polanka, and later in Chorkówka. As the founder of the oil industry, Ignacy Łukasiewicz was ahead of the Americans and Romanians. He was also the inventor of the kerosene lamp. In 1853, with the light of a lamp constructed by him, the first night surgery was performed in the hospital in Łyczaków in Lviv. He died in Chorkówka and was buried in Zręcin near Krosno.
