    SZ1KVDD - Arthur Huddell

Radio Amateurs from Greece will be active with special call SZ1KVDD from Greece, 10 - 25 November 2022.
They will operate on HF Bands.
    QSL via SV1ENG, LOTW, ClubLog.
    Information from their qrz page:
The SS Arthur M. Huddell is a Liberty ship built in the United States during World War II and later converted into the Hellas Liberty floating museum in 2010.

During the summer of 1944, the ship was modified to build a fuel pipeline under the English Channel as part of Operation PLUTO which supported the Normandy landings.

These ships carried all the burden of transportation during the war. These slow-moving 10-knot ships were the ones that carried millions of tons of ammunition, supplies, tanks, food, oil and coal, steam engines, military vehicles, animals and fodder, medical supplies and all kinds of supplies to all war fronts from North Sea, Russia, to the Mediterranean. Also, some of them with their limited military equipment (bow and stern cannons) managed to shoot down German aircraft and sank submarines with depth charges.

Eighteen American shipyards built 2,710 Liberty ships between 1941 and 1945 (an average of three ships every two days), the largest number of ships ever built to a single design.

The SS Arthur M. Huddell was in service until 1984 when she was decommissioned with other vessels of the US Reserve Fleet in the James River, while her future sinking into the ocean to serve as an artificial fish sanctuary was decided.

Of the 2711 ships built since the start of World War II, after its end a total of 943 were made available, more than 600 were purchased by Greek ship owners. In 1966, 603 belonged to the Greek merchant fleet!. In order for the Greek shipping community to honor the service of the Liberties, a vision was developed to acquire a Liberty-type ship for conversion into a floating museum, in Greece.

In 2009 the Arthur M. Huddell was donated to Greece to be converted into the Hellas Liberty floating museum. The fully renovated ship was transferred to the port of Piraeus.

Today the ship is docked at the central port of Piraeus, at the pier "SILO" Gate E3, open to the public every day. Visitors have the opportunity to watch the history of HELLAS LIBERTY on video.

SS Arthur M. Huddell's Call Sign was KVDD. Hellas Liberty will be on the air with the call sign SZ1KVDD, from 10 to 25/11/2022.
