Mun. Drobeta-Turnu Severin - name until 1972: Turnu Severin - is the municipality of residence of Mehedinti county, Romania, a locality developed near the Roman fort Drobeta during Roman Antiquity, Drobeta becoming the first urban center in the region and the third in the province. Dacia, after Sarmizegetusa and Apullum.

In the time of Hadrian, the city was declared a municipality (in 121), when the population had reached 14,000 inhabitants. In the time of Septimius Severus, it was raised to the rank of colony (in 193), which gave the city's inhabitants equal rights with the citizens of Rome.

The city was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt under different occupations.

On April 23, 1833, Turnu Severin was established again, when Mr. Alexandru Dimitrie Ghica issued the deed of foundation of the city.

This year marks 190 years since the documentary attestation of the municipality of Drobeta-Turnu Severin.
