Kozelsk is one of the leading cities in the Kaluga region.
It is first mentioned in the annals of 1146.
Known in the history of the events of 1238 - the old wooden fortress city
seven weeks heroically resisted the Mongols,
in the end it was burned to the ground and named Batu "Evil City".
Batu failed to take the city by storm. The Mongol army tried to shoot stones from a catapult,
but the hilly terrain did not move them to fly to the target. While the enemies were waiting for reinforcements, the soldiers of Kozelsk at night at the detentions in the Tatar-Mongolian camp.
The siege of the city lasted 7 weeks, the natural fought heroically, steadfastly withstanding the raids.
Other Tatar-Mongol troops of the descendants of Genghis Khan came to the aid of Batu.
