His father was Józef Chmielewski (1879 - 1944), and his mother Antonina née Mikonowicz (1884 - 1974). He had two sisters: Wacława (Ogrodowczyk 1910-1997) and Stanisława (Ostrowska 1912-1975).

He graduated from 6 classes of the General School at ul. Rybaki, and until 1939, three classes of Gimnazjum im. st. Żeromski in Warsaw. At the same time, he was a member of the 76th Warsaw ZHP team.

The five-year German occupation was a time of struggle for survival, smuggling trips to the countryside for food, intertwined with studies and exercises in the underground Home Army. In 1941, he graduated from the fourth grade of junior high school and passed the so-called. "small matura", camouflaged under the name Municipal Preparatory Courses for Vocational Schools (Stadtische Vorbereitungslehrgang fur Fachschulen). After the entry of the Red Army on January 17, 1945, he found his family home in ruins. He lived in Łódź at ul. Nawrot 8 and took a job as a draftsman in the Central Board of the Textile Industry, which had just been established. At the same time, he attended the second year of high school, the newly opened private gymnasium of Prof. Duczymiński.

After failing a four-month accelerated final exam, he was mobilized in June 1945 to the Artillery Officers' School in Toruń. After refusing to be educated as an officer of the Polish People's Army, he was penally transferred to a cavalry battery of grooms, and then to the Faculty of Sciences for fine arts. In August 1947, he was demobilized with the rank of corporal.
