    During the Great Patriotic War, Taganrog was occupied for almost two years. The largest underground organization in the south of the country operated in the city, whose struggle against the Nazis is dedicated to the book by G. Hoffmann "Heroes of Taganrog.

    Emerging patriotic groups soon united into a single organization, headed by Semen Morozov, Vasily Afonon and others. Taganrog patriots conducted several successful military operations - they set fire to a warehouse in the port, blew up the carriage train at the freight station, destroyed up to 40 cars in the garage of the plant "Red Hydraulic Press", derailed the military train on the line Martsevo-Koshkino (near Taganrog), conducted a constant propaganda work, destroyed punishers and traitors, disrupted the military field and staff communications. Performed the tasks of the Soviet military command to collect information of a military nature. On a regular basis issued and posted in crowded places of the city leaflets and proclamations "News from our beloved motherland". Over 600 Taganrog residents took part in the anti-fascist struggle. At the beginning of 1943 traitors betrayed several members of the struggle, and soon began mass arrests. Brutal torture, torture and execution in February 1943, and then a second betrayal and new mass executions in June 1943. Seriously undermined the anti-fascist movement, but the memory of Taganrog patriots is alive in the city today. There are monuments, there are streets in honor of the fallen anti-fascists: Morozov, Afonov, Turubarov. Many of its participants died. For their courage and bravery in the fight against the German invaders 126 people were awarded orders and medals. S. Morozov was given the rank of a Hero of the Soviet Union.

    With the liberation of Taganrog on August 30, 1943 complete liberation of the Rostov region from the Nazi invaders.

    Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's decree № 1459 of 03.11.2011 granted Taganrog the Russian Federation title "City of Military Glory".
