Alexander Fredro - biography and works

    Biography

Aleksander Fredro (1793 - 1876) - Polish comedy writer and poet. He was born on June 20, 1793 in Suchorowo, in a wealthy landowning family. The young Fredro was educated at home under the guidance of tutors. At the age of 16, the future poet experienced a real adventure at the side of Napoleon himself. In 1809 Fredro enlisted in the army of the Duchy of Warsaw (the army was commanded by Prince Joseph Poniatowski). The young soldier became famous for his bravery in Napoleon's expedition to Moscow (1812), for which he received the Virtuti Militari cross and the French order of the Legion of Honor. Fredro also ended up in Russian captivity, from where he managed to escape.

After returning to the country, he became the administrator of the family estate (Beńkowa Wisznia). At the same time he began work on his first comedy (appreciated by the public). "Mr. Geldhab" was published in 1818. In 1828 Fredro married his longtime sweetheart - Zofia Skarbek, née Jabłonowska. Subsequent, equally successful works ("Husband and Wife," "Ladies and Hussars") brought the poet increasing public acclaim. In 1834 the premiere of Fredro's best-known comedy titled "The Revenge" took place.

Under the influence of critics (the author of the comedy was accused of "immorality", among other things), Fredro withdrew from cultural life, writing for himself and a circle of friends. After the outbreak of the Hungarian uprising (1848), Fredro's only son (an active participant in the uprising) went into exile in France. Fredro was an active participant in social life, a member of the Society of Friends of Science, the Academy of Learning and a member of the National Diet. He died on July 15, 1876 in Lviv.
    Works:

1815 - "Intrigue on the spur of the moment", "Ladies and Hussars".
    1818 - "Mr. Geldhab"
    1820 - "Husband and wife"
    1822 - "The Foreigner"
1832 - "Maidens' Vows," "Mr. Jowialski"
    1833 - "Revenge" (staged in 1834).
    1839 - "A Night in the Apennines"
1854 - "A Great Man for Small Business".
