    EI80MB - MV Kerlogue

EI80MB MV Kerlogue; This special event call sign is to draw attention to and support the anniversary and also to highlight the remembrance ceremony that will be held in the Maritime Museum of Ireland in April 2024.

December 29th 2023 will mark the 80th anniversary of an extraordinary rescue of 168 German sailors from over 700 that had been left in the waters of the Bay of Biscay after a naval battle between the British navy and the German navy.

The rescue, during WWII, was carried out by the crew of eleven of the small ‘Neutral’ Irish coaster MV Kerlogue (Radio Call Sign EIMB), and lasted more than 10 hours.

Of the 168 rescued, two died on board and were buried at sea, two more died and were first buried in Cork, later to be re buried in the German War Grave Cemetery in Glencree, Co. Wicklow.

The remaining 164 sailors were held in the Curragh internment camp until the end of the war.

EI80MB will be active from 1Nov 2023 to the 31 May 2024 inclusive, with special attention to dates throughout the year of special significance to this tragedy. However there will be particular activity in the weeks around the date of 29 Dec 2023.
