The Historical Greek Battleship Georgios Averof was launched on
12 March 1910 and the Greek Flag was raised on the ship on 16 May 1911.
Until decommissioning in 1952, it had three callsigns, depending on conditions at the time. In particular, since the decade
of the1930s, the Battleship Georgios Averof, used the callsign SZAB.
On 16 May 2024, an Amateur Radio Station with the call sign SZ1AB will be on the air on the Battleship Georgios Averof, honoring the commissioning 113 years ago.

• Participation in Museum Ships Weekend: The HS Battleship Georgios Averof will participate in the Museum Ships Weekend on June 1st and 2nd, 2024.
• Historical Significance: This glorious and legendary battleship, Georgios Averof, is currently moored at Marina Flisvos, near the Piraeus port in Greece. It played a significant role in the Balkan Wars, World War I, and World War II.
• Modes of Operation: During the event, the ship will operate using CW, FT-8, and some SSB modes.
• Call Sign: The ship’s call sign for the event is SZ1AB, which corresponds to its original call sign, SZAB.
• QSL and Clublog Requests: All received QSL cards and clublog requests will be answered via the SV Bureau.

[ SZ1AB ON AIR 17 - 18 OCTOBER 2024 ] 18/10/1944 - The expatriate Greek Fleet, led by the battleship GEORGIOS AVEROF anchored in the bay of Faliro after the withdrawal of the German occupation troops, bringing the Greek Government to the country .
Then the Greek Flag of the battleship GEORGIOS AVEROF was raised on the Acropolis of Athens.
Honoring the above events in which Battleship Georgios Averof took part, SZ1AB will be on the air on October 17th and 18th.
