POLISH WINTER POLE
For many, winter is a time for rest, but for communications enthusiasts from Podlasie, it is the perfect time to take on a technical challenge. On January 23-25, 2026, the Podlasie Radio Group and the Podlasie Radio Community will join forces to organize a pioneering winter expedition to the Suwałki region. This is the first such large-scale, official radio expedition to this region, commonly known as the “Polish Pole of Cold.” .
The main operational base for the event will be the village of Szurpiły, located in the heart of the picturesque landscape of the Suwałki Landscape Park at the foot of Góra Zamkowa. It is from there, in challenging winter conditions, that contact will be made with enthusiasts from all over the country and abroad.
The uniqueness of the expedition is emphasized by the special occasion amateur radio call sign: HF4COLD. Under this call sign, the station will be present on many radio bands, promoting the region and testing ranges in specific winter conditions.
An important point in the expedition schedule will be a visit by the participants to the headquarters of the Suwałki Landscape Park in Turtulu. The meeting is intended not only to integrate the radio community with representatives of the region, but also to highlight the tourist and natural values of the oldest landscape park in Poland. Cooperation with the SPK allows us to present amateur radio as a hobby close to nature and promoting pro-ecological attitudes.
