History of the ROAR Fellowship
Rotarians of Amateur Radio is one of the oldest fellowships of Rotary International. It was organized in 1966 by the late Byron C. Sharpe, W9BE, whose Rotary club in Glencoe, Illinois, USA, sponsored the new fellowship. Also, instrumental in the beginnings of ROAR was George Chatfield, K1UIL. He started a transatlantic net on15 meters with Harold Chadwick, G8ON, in 1969. For many years Chatfield was net control on Sunday and Thursday mornings, assisted by his friend Dr. Mark Elliot, W1YY1. ROAR members participated in their first Rotary International Convention as a fellowship in Denver, Colorado, USA, in 1966. They operated a special event station with the call sign W0RI. The first published record of ROAR membership came out in December 1970. The roster contained calls of 764 members from 40 countries. Today, we have more than 350 members representing 25 countries. Our ROAR fellowship is directed by a central body consisting of the president, immediate past president, secretary, treasurer, webmaster and newsletter editor. We have eight vice presidents representing areas of the world with a large member population or the potential to grow. There are also two sub-assemblies, in Japan and Great Britain, with their own associations and officers. Over the years the ROAR fellowship has had twelve presidents. One of them, the late Hugh Archer, W8JA, went on to become president of Rotary International in 1989.
