Ghana: country overview

Ghana is a country in western Africa. It has a population of over 17 million, most of whom belong to the Guinean language subgroup. The official language is English, so European tourists will have no trouble getting by in this African country. Local languages such as Ga, Ewe, Twi, and others are also widely spoken.
The capital of Ghana is Accra, and the time zone is +3 hours ahead of Moscow in winter and +4 hours ahead in summer.
There are two large mountain plateaus in the country, the Ashanti and Kwa, with the rest of the territory consisting of plains. The weather here is quite hot, with average temperatures ranging from 23 to 30 degrees Celsius, depending on the region. The hottest period is in spring, in April and March, while autumn brings the rainy season, when it rains literally non-stop.

Population and politics

The political system is familiar to us—the president is elected once every four years. Laws are enacted by Parliament.

There is an incredible diversity of religious beliefs among the local population. The law does not establish an official religion, so everyone is free to believe what they want. However, it is noteworthy that in Ghana, more than half of the population (60%) is Christian, which is the highest percentage in West Africa.

The rest of the population is Muslim and follows local pagan beliefs. Almost 20% of the country's population worships local African gods and performs exotic rituals in their honor.

When locals move to cities, they settle in “tribes” — people from the same region live in the same neighborhood. They not only live close to each other, but also engage in joint activities, helping each other and sharing material goods.

Local residents' income

Agriculture is widespread. One of the key crops is cocoa. These beans are the backbone of the country's economy. The best land—the most fertile and extensive, with a good climate—is allocated for growing cocoa beans. In addition to cocoa, corn, cassava, citrus fruits, various nuts, tea, coffee, sugar cane, and tobacco are also grown.
The second main type of industry is the extraction of precious metals – gold and diamonds, as well as iron and manganese ore.
A significant part of the country's population is engaged in agriculture and mining. The rest work in trade and tourism, with a small percentage employed in the social sector and other areas.
In 2012-2014, the unemployment rate in Ghana fell by more than half, but according to official data, about 7% of the population is still unemployed.

Tourism

Not so long ago, the government realized that tourism could be a lucrative industry. Since then, there has been active construction of hotels and resorts to suit every taste and budget. There is no need to worry about accommodation—any tourist can easily find a city hotel with excellent service or a small rural cottage with all the amenities. There are no problems with this. The locals are active and happy to give guided tours.

The main attractions are natural sights: lagoons, thickets, and national parks. The fauna here is impressive—you can see elephants, antelopes, and a wide variety of birds.

Potential dangers

Tourists should avoid wandering the streets after dark, as crime rates remain alarmingly high in African countries. Keep personal and valuable items with you at all times.
In addition, beware of diseases — the main rule for visiting African countries remains relevant here: drink only bottled water. It is also worth staying away from small bodies of fresh water, as they are extremely polluted.
When planning a trip to Ghana, be sure to get vaccinated against common infections in the country, such as rabies, cholera, diphtheria, typhoid, and hepatitis.
There is a very high risk of contracting severe malaria in the country. There are also many HIV-infected people among the local population, which is due to the low overall standard of living in Ghana.
