The main industrial center of the Republic of Kiribati
Betio is an island that is the most populated place in the country. It also acts as the main industrial center. The territory is home to the main power plant, a shipyard, and a port. Almost the entire central zone of this island is occupied by a wide strip of airfield.
The island of Betio is the only one where numerous relics relating to the famous "Battle of Tarawa" can be viewed. It is the largest monument highlighting the war events to be encountered in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. In 1943, U.S. Marines were landed in the Tarawa area. The Betio area was where the main base belonging to the Japanese army was stationed. It was in this place that a bloody battle took place, in which about 5 thousand people were killed. In 1943, in November, Betio, as well as Tarawa were defeated. Some details of those events can be found during a trip to the island.
South Tarawa
This territory is the official capital of the Republic of Kiribati. It is located on the Tarawa Atoll. The population of this place is about 40 thousand people as of 2005.
The constituent parts of the capital are urban municipalities (Bonriki, Bikenibeu, Betio, as well as Bairiki), located on the island territories of the same name.
Almost all governmental, educational, as well as commercial and other significant facilities have been erected in the capital. They are distributed throughout the city's municipalities.
