Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Republic of the Congo takes its name from the name of a people, which translates to “hunters.” This country is located in the heart of Africa, within the equatorial and subequatorial climate zones. It is characterized by constant heat and high humidity. The country is home to numerous tropical forests and savannas with an abundance of valuable tree species.

Tradition and Modernity

The Congo is home to a large number of African tribes that strictly observe the traditions of their ancestors. That is why in the settlements you can see huts with roofs made of palm leaves and residents engaged in local crafts. These include items made of ivory, clay, or precious woods, such as ritual masks. In the evenings, the villages host music and dance performances for guests.

Large cities in the Congo lead a lifestyle similar to that in Europe. There are many shopping centers and high-rise buildings here. The city of Brazzaville is home to the Marien Ngouabi University and the National Museum. The city of Kisangani has an airport, a train station, and a university. In the summer, concerts and entertainment programs are often held in its parks. The city is also a hub for various events and festivals. It features exciting attractions, museums, a botanical garden, factories—such as a brewery—and even its own Kisangani Hydroelectric Power Plant, which supplies the city with electricity.

The main attraction is nature

Among the Congo’s main attractions is its extraordinarily beautiful and mysterious natural landscape. First and foremost is the turbulent and mighty Zaire or Congo River, with its many rapids and waterfalls. It always leaves an unforgettable impression on tourists. The river is 4,344 km long and, along its entire length, is striking for its giant trees and lush vegetation. Here you can see red and ebony trees, as well as oaks over 60 meters tall. An eternal twilight reigns beneath their canopies. This region of Africa is home to the world’s most impenetrable jungles, with stifling heat and dangerous animals, including giant pythons, venomous spiders, and crocodiles. Here, a person can easily contract some of the most dangerous diseases on earth, such as malaria.

The Land of Waterfalls

The waterfalls have long been a major attraction of the Congo River. Among them, Stanley Falls stands out, consisting of numerous waterfalls and rapids, as well as Livingstone Falls, which feature 32 waterfalls and a whole series of rapids. Kinsuka consists of several beautiful cascading waterfalls.

The Congo River retains its full force all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. It carries remnants of vegetation from the rainforest and savanna into the ocean. Unique medicinal herbs grow in these areas, which cure many ailments among both the indigenous people and Europeans. For example, in the Congo River basin, seeds of the very rare kola nut plant are harvested, from which medicines are made in Europe. The abundance of unusual animals in this region is striking, including the Antimachus sail-wing butterfly, the African grey parrot, the river hog, and others. The lakes amidst the tropical forests also leave an indelible impression on travelers, which is why water tourism is widely developed in the country.

Volcanoes Don’t Hinder Tourism

The active Nyiragongo volcano is located in the Congo, within Virunga National Park. It stands at 3,470 meters. At the bottom of the volcano’s crater lies the world’s largest lava lake, characterized by its high fluidity. During an eruption, lava can move at speeds of up to 100 km/h. This often results in loss of life; for example, 147 people died in 2002. Tropical forests grow on the slopes of the volcanoes, home to the rare mountain gorilla.

Congo’s National Parks – The Pride of the Republic

Virunga National Park is located in the northeast of the Republic of the Congo. It is named after the mountain range of the same name. The park’s territory features diverse landscapes: swamps, savannas, bamboo thickets, lava plateaus, glaciers, plains, and mountain ranges with volcanoes. In addition to mountain gorillas, the park is home to chimpanzees, cormorants, hippos, buffalo, giraffes, lions, and many other animals. Among the birds, eagles, hawks, doves, flamingos, and others are particularly noteworthy.

Yangambi National Park is located in the Congo River basin near the city of Kisangani. This is an area of humid tropical forests home to rare plant and animal species, many of which are on the brink of extinction.

Lukaya Park is located very close to the city of Kinshasa. This area features numerous small waterfalls. In the Lukaya River valley, you can visit a bonobo chimpanzee sanctuary, aptly named “Bonobo Paradise.” The park was originally established to care for bonobo orphans after poaching. Today, it provides a natural habitat for chimpanzees that closely resembles the wild.
