Greenland: climate, attractions, cuisine, and much more
The largest island on Earth is Greenland, or Kalaallit Nunaat, which literally translates as “Green Land.” It is no coincidence that the island was given this name: although today it is covered with glaciers, when it was first discovered in 982 by the Scandinavian explorer Eirik Ruda, it was covered with greenery, which is why it got its name.
Now, Greenland is famous for its cold climate, which prevents people from properly developing the island, making it one of the few corners of the planet where nature is truly magnificent.
Greenland is suitable for tourists who enjoy winter and extreme sports — it is best to plan trips for April — as well as for photographers and artists, who will surely be impressed by the local landscapes.
The island also has a rich history, with peoples living there for centuries, and its own culture, which will be an interesting subject for ethnologists to study.

The island's climate
As mentioned above, Greenland is a cold, glacier-covered island. The temperature here always stays below 0°C, averaging -12°C in summer and dropping to -60°C in winter.
And although such conditions may scare off potential visitors, there is something in the nature of Greenland that everyone will want to see. Every year from May to July, the island experiences polar day, when the sun hardly appears above the horizon; it is very easy to lose track of time in such conditions.
On the other hand, from November to February, the polar night takes over, and during this time, the sun usually rises above the surface of the island only for a short time, after which it disappears for a long time.
Despite its low temperatures, Greenland is not an icy desert at all. And before talking about its architectural attractions, we should mention its natural ones: the mountains and icebergs, which never cease to amaze tourists with their grandeur and unusualness. In addition to these, in the south of Greenland there are hot springs, where the water temperature can occasionally reach 38°C.

Attractions
The population of Greenland, which numbers 57,728 (as of 2016), is mostly concentrated in the south of the island. The largest cities are also located there, offering a variety of places that are definitely worth visiting during your trip.
For example, the city of Nuuk, which is the capital of Greenland, is home to the National Museum. It was founded in the 1960s and contains many exhibits that tell the history of the island, showcase archaeological finds, and introduce museum visitors to the crafts and culture of the local people.
Two other well-known museums are located in the city of Ilulissat: the Cold Museum and the Knud Rasmussen Museum, named after the ethnographer who studied the Arctic.
Upernavik is home to the oldest museum in Greenland, as its name, “The Old Town Museum,” eloquently suggests. In addition, the city in which it is located is one of the coldest places on the island.
The town of Uummannaq, the home of Santa Claus, is of great interest to both adults and children in Greenland.
Cuisine
For Europeans, the national cuisine of Greenland may seem very unusual and even shocking, as the food is never heat-treated.
The most popular food among the locals is raw meat from marine animals. The fresher, the better, and the most delicious is considered to be warm meat from a freshly killed mammal — a seal, whale, or walrus. All parts of the carcass are edible, even those that seem inedible at first glance, such as bones and bile.
The most popular delicacy here is whale skin with a layer of fat, called “mattek.” The remaining pieces of the carcass are processed in a very unusual way: they are buried in the ground for a while or immersed in seawater.
Native Greenlanders consider such food to be very healthy and even healing, and there is a reason for this, as they have never suffered from vitamin deficiency and diseases associated with avitaminosis. Even so, not every European would be tempted by such food. However, gastronomic adventurers in Greenland will easily find a restaurant where they can try traditional dishes.

Leisure and entertainment
Due to its location and natural features, Greenland is a great place for all kinds of extreme entertainment and active recreation. Any excursion or route you are offered is guaranteed to be interesting, well thought out in terms of comfort and organization.
The most popular entertainment for tourists is watching polar mirages and the northern lights.
In addition to contemplative recreation, tourists are offered several types of active recreation:
dog sledding;
- kayaking;
- fishing;
- hunting;
- skiing;
- trekking.
Important to know: hunting in Greenland is regulated by very strict rules, as most animals are protected by law, and hunting trophies cannot be taken out of the country.

Tips for tourists
When planning a vacation in Greenland, it is important to take into account the rather strict requirements of local environmental protection laws. If you are going fishing, you will need to purchase a fishing license. Licenses can be purchased at the Tourist Office or from a tour operator. The longer the validity period, the more expensive the license.
Another requirement: when in nature, tourists must take all waste (even organic) and rubbish with them. This is very important, as the fines here are very high.
Greenland's customs regulations do not restrict tourists from importing and exporting local currency. To export souvenirs made from the tusks, bones, or baleen of local animals, you will need a special permit, which can be obtained from a tourist office or shop. By the way, you can export meat or fish from the country, but no more than 11 kg.
And one last important point: tips in hotels and establishments in Greenland are usually included in the total bill.
