Bermuda Islands

The most mysterious place on the planet

When it comes to the Bermuda Islands, almost everyone immediately thinks of the triangle of the same name. Many even believe that they form it, although this is not actually the case: in reality, Bermuda, along with the east coast of Florida and the north coast of Puerto Rico, make up one side of this geometric figure. However, the inhabitants of Bermuda are only too happy about this misconception, as it so happens that the name of their homeland has become a symbol of many anomalous events, the nature of which scientists have not yet been able to explain completely... The Bermuda Islands are located in the northwestern part of the Atlantic Ocean, approximately nine hundred kilometers from the east coast of the United States, and, according to geologists, are of coral origin. They are an archipelago of about one hundred and fifty islands, of which two dozen are inhabited. The largest of these is the one named quite simply, but appropriately: Main Island (which actually consists of ten small islands connected by causeways and bridges). The total area of the Bermuda Islands is just over 53 square kilometers, and according to the latest census, they are home to 64,237 people. They are an overseas territory of the United Kingdom, and their capital is the city and port of Hamilton, located on Bermuda Island.

Some information from the history of the Bermuda Islands

The Bermuda Islands are called this, and not something else, because they were discovered in 1503 by the Spanish navigator Juan Bermúdez. After that, for quite a long time, this archipelago remained undeveloped from an economic point of view, as the colonizers had other concerns. The first settlement in Bermuda appeared only in 1609, founded by British sailors who were shipwrecked off its coast.

The colonists began to engage in agriculture, and since Spain showed no interest in the Bermuda Islands, England declared them its colony. Slaves were brought there from Africa to work on plantations, and after slavery was abolished in 1838, the economy fell into decline for almost a century. At the beginning of the last century, tourists began to arrive in Bermuda, and catering to them gradually became the main industry.

The Mystery of the Bermuda Triangle

In the middle of the last century, planes and ships began to disappear without a trace in the Bermuda Triangle, giving rise to many hypotheses about why these disasters were happening.

The first person to use the term “Bermuda Triangle” was Vincent Gaddis, who published an article about these mysterious events in a magazine. Perhaps the most famous incident on record is the disappearance of a squadron of American military aircraft over Bermuda on December 5, 1945. Subsequently, both air and sea vessels disappeared there, much more frequently than in any other area of the world's oceans.

Numerous researchers of the Bermuda Triangle phenomenon have put forward a host of hypotheses, the most extravagant of which suggests the involvement of aliens. As for the more or less realistic scientific versions, according to one of them, methane hydrate is actively decomposing at the bottom of the ocean in the Bermuda Triangle. As a result, giant bubbles periodically appear and float to the surface. When ships enter them, they sink almost instantly, without even having time to send a distress signal. When methane rises into the air, it significantly reduces its density, causing planes to crash. According to another theory, the cause of shipwrecks may be so-called “wandering waves,” which can reach heights of up to thirty meters.

What can you do in Bermuda?

First and foremost, the Bermuda Islands are a great place to relax. The largest number of excellent beaches are located on the southern coast, in the area of Jobson's Cove, Warwick Long Bay, and Horseshoe Bay.

Travelers who are passionate about diving should head to Southampton, off the coast of which lies Church Bay: visibility there reaches 60 meters, and the underwater world is rich in flora and fauna. In addition, off the northeast coast of Bermuda, at a shallow depth, lie several sunken ancient ships (mainly Spanish).

The best time to visit the Bermuda Islands is between May and September, when the air temperature is around +26 °C. It should be noted that tropical typhoons almost always bypass Bermuda, so tourists have nothing to fear.
