Ascension Island is one of the islands of the Atlantic Ocean. It is located on the southern equator and is few hundred miles away from Saint Helena. Tourists need to get permission prior to visiting the island. The island, along with Tristan da Cunha and St Helena is British Overseas Territory’s part. Ascension Island is a volcanic island, made up of low vegetation, and adorned with the Green Mountain, with 2818 feet height. The green and lush Green Mountain is located right at the center of Ascension Island. Don’t be fooled by the island’s small size. Here there are lots to do and explore. You can go for scuba diving, walks, and enjoy many sports activities, like, squash, tennis, football, golf, etc. If you are not interested in these activities, then you can go for sea fishing. Families and employees of organizations that are active here in the island inhabit Ascension Island.
There are lots to see in Ascension Island
Ascension Island has many beautiful, gold sandy beaches. However, most beaches are not swim-friendly and it is because the undercurrents, which are only ideal for the Green Turtles.
The beach that is close to the pier head though is apt for swimming, because of its favorable conditions. The English Bay is amongst the most renowned beaches that are meant for swimming. It is only a few minutes’ drive from the city of Georgetown.
Once done with the English Bay beach, reach the Comfortless Cove beach. It is a small and secluded beach. So, if you want to relax and be far from the maddening crowd, then Comfortless Cove is the beach meant for you. Ascension Island also consists of outdoor swimming pools.
The Heritage Society
Heritage Society is a must visit museum of Ascension Island. It houses an extensive collection of artifacts and photographs. Then there is the Fort Hayes that offers an insight to the rich heritage and culture of Ascension Island.
Fumeroles
For those with an adventurous bend, must make sure to visit the natural lava caves of the island. It is at the Command Hill’s foot, close to the Grotto, the largest caves are located. When visiting the caves, do make sure to carry a torch or light, as the terrain’s conditions are pretty tricky in nature.
Look beyond the volcanic terrain of Ascension Island
If you really want to get the most out of the island, then go to the Ascension Hash House Harriers. If you fancy the ocean then the island will surely not displease you. The caves, wrecks and waves all together enhance the diversified nature of the beaches of the island.
