What you need to know about Vietnam

Vietnam is located on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. The southern and eastern borders of Vietnam are washed by the South China Sea, while the northern and western parts of the country border China, Laos, and Cambodia.
The name of the country has a simple meaning: “Viet” is the name of the titular nation, and ‘Nam’ means “south.” The reference to the south has ancient roots and is based on relations with China: the Vietnamese considered their country to be south of China, while the latter, in turn, was considered a northern country.

Geographical features of Vietnam

All political life in the country is concentrated in the city of Hanoi, which is also a world-famous resort that attracts numerous tourists every year. Hanoi's infrastructure is ready to accommodate large numbers of guests, offering hotels for every budget, entertainment, beaches, restaurants, and more.
Vietnam is the perfect place for those who want to experience ancient Eastern culture firsthand, sample the unique local cuisine, learn about the country's rich history, and simply enjoy the warm sea and gentle sunshine.
The climate is mild, making the country attractive to tourists almost all year round.
The local time is only three hours ahead of Moscow, which makes it easier to adapt to the local conditions and allows you to fully enjoy your vacation.

Climate features of Vietnam

The country's mild weather conditions are due to its high altitude above sea level, ranging from 500 to 2,000 meters. The climate ranges from subtropical to temperate.
In the south of Vietnam, warm and humid weather prevails from April to October, which is the most favorable period for European tourists.

Local population

It is recognized that Vietnam has the largest number of Buddhists, but statistics indicate that Buddhists make up only slightly more than 9% of the total population. According to a survey, at least 80% of Vietnamese are atheists.
The official language is Vietnamese, but many locals speak English, Chinese, and French with ease. In popular tourist areas, Vietnamese people speak many languages, including broken Russian, due to the influx of tourists from post-Soviet countries.

Resort areas

The territory of Vietnam is conventionally divided into three parts: Central, North, and South. The North will appeal to lovers of antiquity, as it is here that you can learn about the history and traditions of the Vietnamese people. Hanoi is located in the north, as well as picturesque nature reserves, tea and coffee plantations.
The best time of year to visit this region of Vietnam is spring. The central part is attractive for fans of resort vacations.
There are long beaches with the cleanest sand, as well as numerous entertainment events, for which the city of Da Nang is especially famous. However, lovers of ancient architecture will also find something to see here - just look at the city of Hue with its ancient temples.
The south of Vietnam is where all the economic life of the country takes place. The largest city in the south is Ho Chi Minh City, home to expensive restaurants, prestigious hotels, brand-name stores, large shopping centers, and other attributes of a modern metropolis. The resort areas of the south are located in the cities of Phu Quoc, Nha Trang, and Phan Thiet.

Customs

Customs regulations are relatively lenient. However, the Vietnamese authorities are very strict when it comes to obvious violations of the law: for example, drug trafficking is often punishable by death, and the export of antiques can result in a long prison sentence or, at the very least, a huge fine.
Internet and mobile communications
While in Vietnam, you can easily stay in touch with home: in large cities and resort areas, there are Internet cafes at every turn. All hotels, bars, and restaurants, as well as beaches and parks, have free Wi-Fi.
For mobile communications, it is better to purchase a SIM card from a local operator, as foreign operators' services in Vietnam are quite expensive.

Local currency

The national currency of Vietnam is the Vietnamese dong, which is easy to obtain – currency exchange offices are located at airports, bank branches, travel agencies, markets, etc. It does not matter where you exchange currency, as the exchange rate is the same everywhere with minor differences.
Please note that Russian rubles are rarely accepted in Vietnam and at an extremely unfavorable exchange rate, so it is best to bring euros and US dollars with you.

Safety

Despite the low crime rate, beware of pickpockets and scammers, who can be found literally at every turn. This could be a customs officer demanding additional cash for dubious services (such as a visa), or a pedestrian who seems to have accidentally fallen under the wheels of your car.
