OJ0W OJ0YL Market Reef

OJ0YL & OJ0W Märket Reef DXpedition September 20–26, 2025

Between Finland and Sweden lies Märket Reef, a rocky outpost that has captured the imagination of DXers for decades. With no trees, only a lighthouse and seabirds standing guard, this tiny Baltic island is split by a uniquely zigzagging international border re-drawn in 1985 — a result of a century-old lighthouse placement mistake in 1885.

From September 20–26, 2025, the island will come to life on the airwaves. OJ0W and OJ0YL will be activated by the Finnish-based team of: Anne OH2YL, Jari OH6QU, Juha OH6XX and Panu OH7CW.

Landing is weather-dependent, with access planned via Finland.

On the air:

- Bands: 160 to 6 meters, emphasis on low bands
OJ0YL Log searchOJ0W Log search - Modes: CW, FT8, and SSB
- Equipment includes multiband wire antennas, verticals, VDAs (10–20m), and a 6-element beam for 6m
- At least two stations active around the clock, using amplifiers for strong, reliable signals

A full VOACAP propagation forecast is available at https://www.voacap.com/dx/oj0yl/, featuring band-by-band predictions and sunrise/sunset data for Märket and wherever your QTH is — great for planning those low-band QSOs.

If landing occurs early, the team plans to participate in the Scandinavian Activity Contest (CW).

ClubLog uploads will be live-streamed if connectivity allows; otherwise, logs will be updated several times daily. OQRS will open once the DXpedition concludes.

This activation offers DXers a rare opportunity to log OJ0 from one of Europe’s smallest and most weather-beaten entities. With skilled operators and powerful gear, Märket Reef will definitely be heard — far and wide.

QSL: OJ0YL via OH2YL and OJ0W via OH7CW.

OJ0W OJ0YL Märket Reef DXpedition – Final Waves from OJ0YL & OJ0W (Sep 25 Update) by Jari Perkiömäki OH6BG As operations on Märket Reef approach their conclusion, the final days of the DXpedition continue to deliver solid activity across the bands. * Antenna Systems Restored Following recent challenges caused by strong winds and high waves, the team has completed repairs on all antennas, except the low-band BOG. With systems now fully operational, contacts are once again flowing steadily. * Low Bands Open to the West This morning brought good low-band conditions toward the West. If you’ve been chasing OJ0, now’s the time to tune in and catch those last signals. * Surprise 60M Activation Tonight! Here’s a treat: the team tested the 160M L-vertical on 60M and found it performs satisfactorily. Expect activity tonight — a rare chance to log Märket Reef on a new band. Keep your eyes on DX Summit and cluster spots! * Wrapping Up Operations Starting tomorrow, Friday early afternoon UTC, antennas will begin coming down — except for the 160M L-vertical and EFHW, which will stay up for one final overnight push. One station will remain active through the night into Saturday morning. * Departure Plans The team plans to leave the island at 06:00 UTC on Saturday, September 27. Until then, it’s your last chance to catch OJ0YL & OJ0W on the bands! * Watch Stations Live Follow the activity in real time via Club Log’s live streams: - OJ0W – https://clublog.org/livestream/OJ0W - OJ0YL – https://clublog.org/livestream/OJ0YL Stay tuned as the DXpedition wraps up its final operations from Märket Reef.

OJ0YL OJ0W News Storms, Waves, and Resilience at OJ0YL & OJ0W, Märket Reef, Sep 23, 2025 by Jari Perkiömäki OH6BG Today, it’s been a dramatic and action-packed day on the island. Late last night (Sep 22/23) and into the morning, fierce winds surged up to 18 m/s, whipping up massive waves that crashed over the flat rocks — right where our vertical antennas stand tall. Nature wasn’t holding back. Speaking of the antennas, the name of the game right now: verticals, verticals, verticals. Here’s the current lineup holding down the bands: * 160M L-vertical – first proper run last night. * 80/40M Butternut vertical – steady performer. * 30M vertical – doing its quiet magic. * 20/15M EndFed wire – versatile and reliable. * 17/12M vertical – just meters from the sea, soaking up that saltwater gain. * 10M vertical – also right by the water, running solid pile-ups into NE US, South America, Southern EU, and the Middle East. * BOG (Beverage on Ground) – low-band RX, beaming North America and South Asia. You can follow the action live via Club Log Live Streams and DX Summit — the latter even offers online propagation prediction so you can see when the path is hot. — Livestream for OJ0YL: https://clublog.org/livestream/OJ0YL — Livestream for OJ0W: https://clublog.org/livestream/OJ0W But, this morning (Sep 23), the team discovered that the 160M BOG antenna had been swept away, and not long after, the L-vertical lost critical wiring, rendering it inoperable for now. With the winds still roaring, the crew is holding off until conditions improve before launching full SAR (Search and Rescue) operations across the island to recover what they can. And just when things couldn’t get more intense, the 12/17M vertical collapsed, almost being pulled into the sea by the strong waves. Thanks to quick thinking and fast action, the team managed to save it just in time and relocate it to safety. It’s now back in place and ready to go! Despite the challenges, spirits are high — OJ0YL & OJ0W have together hit the 10,000 QSO milestone! The crew is energized, determined, and ready to keep pushing forward. The island may be wild, but the team is wilder. P.S. To our Polish ham radio friends: if you happen to spot any mysterious BOG antenna parts floating by — possibly looking slightly confused — please send them back our way. We promise a generous reward... beer, gratitude, and eternal DX glory!
