San Ambrosio and San Felix
Small volcanic islands in the Chilean Oceanic Trench, located 900 km off the coast of Chile. The islands cover an area of approximately 15 and 10 km2, respectively, and have a small population. The islands belong to the Republic of Chile. They were discovered by Spanish navigators in the mid-16th century. In the 19th century, expeditions from various countries visited the area, including the Russian expedition of O. E. Kotzebue on the ship “Predpriyatiye” in 1824. The islands are the peaks of a large volcanic mountain at the bottom of the ocean, where the depths exceed 3,500 m. Each of the islands is formed by a volcanic cone with a height of 191 m on San Felix Island and 533 m on San Ambrosio Island. They are composed of basalt lava and tuff. The coasts are steep and slightly indented. The climate is subtropical, maritime, and trade wind. Average monthly temperatures vary seasonally from 16 to 21°C. Precipitation is 250 mm per year, mainly in winter and mostly on the southeastern windward slopes. The soils are red. The vegetation consists of hard-leaved shrubs and xerophytic grasses. The population is engaged in fishing, gardening, and servicing the local weather station.
