Iceland
Iceland is a small island nation with a unique northern charm and breathtakingly beautiful nature, which is the country's main attraction: geysers, volcanoes, fjords, waterfalls, glaciers, and the unique northern lights—all found on this small piece of land.

Life in Iceland
Iceland is the least densely populated country in Europe, with only 2.8 people per square kilometer. The locals are mostly descendants of Norwegians with a small mix of Celtic tribes (from Scotland and Ireland). Iceland is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, with a very high standard of living. Icelanders also have a high life expectancy: men live to an average of 81 years, and women to 77 years.
Climate
Despite the name of the country, which translates as “land of ice,” Iceland is not an arctic desert. On the contrary, the climate here, although northern, is quite mild.
On average, the temperature in summer ranges from +10 to +12 degrees, sometimes reaching +20, and in winter it rarely drops below zero degrees Celsius. Due to the Gulf Stream surrounding the country, its ports do not freeze, but there are many winds, so when traveling here, it is worth preparing for changeable weather.

Nature
The landscape of Iceland is practically devoid of vegetation (at present, its nature resembles tundra), but this does not detract from the beauty of the country's main island: numerous rivers, lakes, geysers, mountains, and waterfalls make this country so picturesque that fantasy films can be shot here without any sets or special effects. The country's fauna consists mainly of birds, and up to 300 species of fish inhabit the coastal waters, but only a few of them are edible (the most popular are cod and herring).
The country's volcanoes are a special attraction. Thanks to volcanic rocks, the surface here has a multitude of shades and textures. In Iceland, there is black sand, soil of all colors from terracotta red and chocolate to ash gray, purple, and green, volcanic rocks, magnificent and majestic fjords, which can only be overcome by “going around” many kilometers.
In Iceland, two opposing elements coexist peacefully: fire, glowing in volcanoes and traditional bonfires as tall as five-story buildings, and water, which is abundant in this tiny country (springs, mountain rivers, lakes, glaciers, and the ocean). Interestingly, the locals do not swim in the ocean, considering the water too cold. Thanks to a social program, a huge number of swimming pools have been built throughout the country.
Another natural attraction of Iceland, associated with its northern location, is the aurora borealis, which paints the sky in incredible colors. However, to admire this heavenly beauty in both the literal and figurative sense, you will have to visit the island in winter (from November to April), when night reigns supreme in the country and daylight lasts no more than five hours.

Tourism
Iceland is not suitable for tourists accustomed to absolute comfort and an “all-inclusive” system. The country is mostly wild and off-road, so only all-wheel-drive SUVs are acceptable for car travel. When walking, you must remain alert at all times, especially in mountainous areas: narrow roads and strong winds make it easy to slip and fall. Caution and readiness for the most unexpected manifestations of the soil will help you cope with situations such as sudden changes in the landscape (sandy and volcanic rocks can change completely unpredictably).
Tourists who want to enjoy all the natural riches of the country have the opportunity to see everything from the air. Since not all attractions can be reached on foot or by car, excursions in small two-seater planes are popular in Iceland. You can fly to the Vatnajökull glaciers, the white-green Lake Viti on top of a volcano, any of the tiny islands (and even beyond the Arctic Circle if you wish) and simply admire the amazing landscape of this country.
Tourists are advised to visit the country in the summer. Firstly, this is the time of the polar day in Iceland, and even at the “darkest” hour, it will be similar to the moments before sunrise in the middle latitudes. Secondly, many hotels and guesthouses in the country simply close for the winter, and the country enters a quiet and mysterious period of polar night.
