A rare opportunity presented itself in July 2004 when I was invited by Alexander, 4L5A to assist him with hardware upgrading at his D44TT/D4B contest location before the WAE CW contest.

Finally I worked my first USA and that was Bob N7UA at around 04z. In the first 5 hours I had over 350 QSOs in the log from 13 zones and 56 countries! With a short vertical, 700W TX and no RX antennas! I was fevering! I couldnt wait till the next round.

CQ WW DX SSB 2008 as all the other contests was full of intrigues. I would like to take up the points which are the most interesting to me.

I think that everyone who had ever visited the D4B or D4C would have noticed that the training is having place in immediate proximity to D4B/D4C position.

I am just back from D4! Back to PA. I did around 190 QSO, around 3.5 h airtime (family friendly mode), always 5W with kx3, internal battery, triple leg ant on dx-wire pole (10 m), on the beach, with strong wind and sun in my neck, paper-logging, kent twin-paddle.

My first visit to São Vicente took place in November 2000. I spent a few weeks in Mindelo, the only town on the island, and made thousands of CW contacts using my call sign D44CF.

This is not a story about contesting. I do like contests, and in my opinion every Amateur Radio operator should participate in a contest at least a few times in his/her lifetime.

I operated from the island of Boa Vista in Cape Verde for just three days whilst on holiday there in November 2013.
